Pumpkin Carving & Guts

My kids carved their Halloween pumpkins tonight. They turned out awesome. Dad helped. We have those safety carving knifes, so they did a good portion of it themselves.

Here is Ethan's. His is supposed to be the pumpkin from the movie Halloween:

Emma's pumpkin is Jack Skellington, from A Nightmare Before Christmas:

For the guts portion of my blog post, I was referring to my Week in the Life, the guts of the book, the inside pages... here is Saturday... I still need to do some work, but this is it so far:

I just signed up for Jessica Sprague's FREE online journaling class. I need to learn to journal better. I tend to write a few sentences and call it a day. I have a journal that I write to Emma in for her. I've been writing in it forever, but for some reason, I just don't do it on my layouts. Hopefully, this will push me. Here's the link if your interested... hey, it's free, what have you got to lose??? Jessica Sprague

Later aligators!

I had such a busy week, I'm so glad it's Friday. I worked on a medical education brochure, a mailer for a new client, that had 3 separate letters, one for each location, a letter for a university... I'm sure I'm missing something.

I was able to do a few small scrappy things. I needed to send a thank you card to my mother-in-law for my birthday gifts. I also finally finished my ATC card for the swap we had over on the All Moments Remembered board.

Here's the Thank You card:

Here's a quick "hi" card that I made to send with my ATC:

And, here's the ATC. You were to make an ATC based on your favorite book. My favorite book is The Good Earth. I've read it several times. The last time back in May. Love it. I don't know why... maybe because the woman that wrote it is from Pennsylvania, and that Buck's County is named for her family... maybe it's the story of rags to riches.

That's it for now. I have 5 pictures of the inside pages of my Week in the Life journal taken. I'll post those next time. Maybe I can finish the last 3 before I post, then I'll have one whole day complete!

Don't forget to check out the contest at the Scrap n Supply Shack. See below for the great American Crafts prize!

Week in the Life ~ Journal Cover

I have finally finished my Week in the Life cover for my journal. I had fun painting and distressing it so much so, that I thought I'd share my process with you.

Here is the journal in it's original state. It was fine, and I could have used it as is, but, I wanted something different, something more me.
The first thing I did, was take the book apart. I just pulled the binding rings open and removed the covers.

The next step was to take gesso and prepare the surface for paint. I applied two coats.

Once the gesso dried, it was ready for some paint. I squirted some red and silver directly onto the journal cover and just used a paint brush to spread it around.

I liked the streaky painted look, and it looks good red, but not quite there yet.

I took Ranger Distress ink and rubbed it into the cover. I used walnut. It really brought out the red, made the color much richer.

I sprayed some Krylon Matte finish spray over the entire painted surface. However, this wasn't doing the trick, the paint was just flaking off at any little scrape or bump. I intended for this journal to be handled a lot and I can't have the paint flaking off. At this point, I was starting to get a little discouraged.

I decided to try some Modge Podge. That seemed to do the trick. After it dried a few hours, it was ready to decorate. I ran my fingernail along the edge and the paint wasn't flaking off anymore. :)

Here is the finished cover. I love it!!

I have the entire inside laid out. Each day has 8 pages. This is quite an udertaking, but in the end will be worth it. Something to look back on in 5 or 10 years when everything has changed.

Happy Sunday.

Mini Toots!

Two little mini toots.... I have a layout on the home page of Creating Keepsakes magazine this week. It's the one I highlighted. They had a call for food layouts. This one is about pie.
Here's the actual layout, it's completely digital:

And last week, I had another layout on the home page... this one I sent in for the KI Memories DT call.

Here's the actual layout, this is an all paper layout and it's all KI Memories stuff:

Well, I may not have made the KI Memories design team, but, the layout got me on the CK home page. My Halloween tussies mussie (see below for picture or click here) was in the gallery featured projects last week, but, I forgot to get a screen capture of it. I was pretty excited!!

I received my November Scrap n' Supply Shack kit.... oh, I love this one. It's so me. I love the colors, and the patterns... I'm so excited to do some scrappin' with this kit. Here's a hint!

Oh, and over on the SnSS site, we are giving away a travel kit... I'll have more details on that next week, but Shannen is getting the message board ready over there, and the gallery... so you all can play for a chance to win a free kit!!

Blog ya later, I'm gonna get my scrap on today!!

I did something crafty today

It didn't take me very long... I did this card for my dad:

Matt drew the owl, and I cut it out on the Silhouette. My dad told me I didn't know how to spell "who"... I said the owl's talkin'... get it... hoo, hoo!

We took down some food and a cake and cupcakes. The kids wanted the cupcakes. We ate lunch, my dad opened his gifts, we had some cake... it was a nice quiet day. I hope my dad is OK... he doesn't talk much. It was his first birthday without mom. I tried to make it special. He's not the kind of guy who wants fussed over, and he'd shoot me if I threw him a party... so this nice laid back day was hopefully nice for him.

He lives in the country... and wow is it gorgeous there. The leaves are changing already.... seems too soon.

Wow, it was a beautiful day. I hope tomorrow is just as nice. Here are some shots I took while at my dad's house. These are wild rosehips:

This is joe pie weed. It used to be pink, now it's turning brown. When I was little, being the crafty little kid that I was always making things... I'd take these dried out stalks, which are hollow, and form spoons and forks with them. Great for mixing up mud pies.

A rock in my dad's creek. So pretty with the light and the moss on it.

Here's the lane my dad lives on. This goes back to one other house. I guess I should have said he lives in the woods. But, it's not that deep in the woods. There is a corn field right across, and one behind him thru the woods. Many a morning we'd wake up with cows in our yard.

And this is Sophie... I was playing with my camera settings, getting a close up shot:

Well, I've got Sat, Sun, Mon and part of Tues of the "Document a Week" laid out. I was thinking of printing out the photos and playing a bit with the Saturday layout. It's too late here right now. 11 PM. I think I'll wait until tomorrow.

Have a great weekend.

Ack.... I'm swamped

So, why the heck am I posting on my blog???

It's called procrastination.

Plus my work project is soooo boring, it's a proposal, and the guy I'm working with is so unorganized, and writes so small.... seriously people when you give me changes on a project could you type it so I can read it. Now I have to type everything in. I type fast, that's not the problem, I just can't read this dude's handwriting.

So, after I finish my project, I might take on this challenge, because I just don't have enough on my crafty plate. Check it out, it's on the All Moments Remembered Board, and it's a challenge to use photos in a sequence to tell a story. Really cool concept.

Here's the link to the challenge. No prize involved, but you can challenge yourself.

If you're looking for prizes & RAKS, All Moments Remembered is having an online crop tomorrow starting at 4 pm est. They're always fun, and there are challenges from AMR and some of the board members. It's always fun.

Emma had a swim meet yesterday. I went to get some filler photos my Ali book, the Document a Week in Your Life.... I discovered that my camera has a drive that lets me shoot like I have an SLR... I am beyond thrilled. We've had this camera for 2+ years. How funny. And there is also a white balance setting that is awesome for taking out the ugly yellow when you take pictures indoors.

Ooops, off topic, anyway, these photos would be perfect for Heather's challenge on the AMR board:

Gettin' ready:

for kick off:

Doin' the backstroke:

go Emma!

Woo hoo!! She placed third, lane six.

Hey, not bad for never ever swimming competivitly before. Her first year.

Well, back to work, I guess.... Fridays should be held strictly for fun and relaxation. We should have 3 day weekends, don't ya think???

Have a great weekend!!
